Violence erupted at the election of the Ashewo Union, formally known as the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes NANP. The elections took place at a popular hangout along LASU-Iba Express Road in Lagos.
The violence erupted when the former secretary of the Ashewo Union, Jessica Elvis was announced by the electoral committee chairman, Franca Chikam, as winner of the election.
Jessica Elvis was announced the winner after she garned 300 votes, as against the incumbent president, Madam Felix Efoyo who got 153 votes. Tanar Tion, the Nasarawa state coordinator who also contested got 63 votes.
But the incumbent president refused to accept defeat and insisted that the election was rigged. She ordered that the results should be cancelled because the election was marred by irregularities.
A fight subsequently broke out as a result of the argument. As the fight ensued, a loyalists of Madam Efoyo broke a bottle and stabbed one of her fellow sex-workers.
Nigerians are still amused at the existence of a prostitutes’ association. The National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes NANP ostensibly exists to protect and further the interest of prostitutes in Nigeria. The association has branches in all states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. There have been recent debates whether or not to fully legalize prostitution in Nigeria.
