Mr. Afeez Baruwa, a part-time lecturer in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) allegedly raped an 18-year-old girl seeking for admission into the university. The lecturer who belongs to the same landlords’ association with the victim’s father was supposed to assist her to gain admission into the university. On the day of the incident, the lecturer took her to the university campus as early as 5:30am and allegedly raped her in a deserted area of the campus.
Mr. Afeez who claimed it wasn’t rape but an activity of mutual consent has been arrested by the Surulere Police Division. The case is presently on the table on the Director of the Office of Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi.
This incident is coming at a time when admission-seekers are running helter-skelter to get a place in the university of their choice amidst discouraging admission policies from Joint Admission & Matriculation Board (JAMB) and some of the universities. This situation will likely expose them to fraudsters or abusers, like in the case of this girl who was raped. Parents and students have therefore been advised to be cautious of who they approach for assistance to get their names or the name of their wards on the admission list of universities. It has not been reported if Mr. Afeez Baruwa has been charged yet. As at the time of publishing this, we have not received any official statement from University of Lagos (UNILAG) authorities.
