The students of the University of Benin have taken to the streets after over a decade of peace and quietness in the institution. Although a lot of people are speculating that the cause of the riot is inadequate facilities on campus, wazobians.com learnt from a reliable source, a lecturer at the institution that the riot started as a result of the demolition of the residences of the lecturers in GRA, Benin.
Our source said “my house is one of the demolished houses. I used the most part of yesterday to move my things and right now, I do not have a place to stay. Even lecturers are also a part of the riot.” She informed us that the land which was given to the University of Benin lecturers by the Ogbemudia Administration is now being forcefully taken over by the Oshiomole administration which has embarked on a demolition exercise already. We have not been able to get a statement from the state government yet.
Meanwhile, the city is presently on a standstill as major roads, including the Benin-Ore-Lagos expressway is blocked by the rioting students.
