The designer of Nigeria’s national flag, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, is not getting enough recognition has he deserves.
Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the man who designed Nigeria’s flag, has been described as a suffering statesman.
Taiwo Aknikunmi designed the flag in October 1959, a year before Nigeria gained independence. He was paid – 100 pounds, equal to $ 281 in 1959.
However, this important Nigerian lives in one of the poorest areas of Ibadan. Reports have it that his house can only be reached by foot. He allegedly does not have a car and even a mobile phone.
Reports also have it that he was forced to retire from civil service in 1993 due to his progressive illness. And his pension payments were so irregular that he could not even feed himself.
Taiwo Akinkunmi claimed that the government has made several promises to him but have fulfilled very few. But some kind Nigerians have reportedly reached out to him. In 2008 Akinkunmi was given a cheque of two million naira as fee for his appearance on a TV show. Akinkunmi ‘s son used this money to build the house of dream for his father painted with the colours of Nigerian flag.
