Mallam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity as assured Nigerians that the President is aware of the controversial social media bill and will not support any bill tat is not in accordance with the Country’s constitution
Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity have reacted to the social media bill which has caused uproar in the country and is being debated by the senate, confirmed that Mr President has vowed to defend the Country’s constitution and will not in any case approve anything not supported by the constitution.
In a statement released by Mallam Garba, Mr. President:
Is not averse to lawful regulation, so long that is done within the ambit of the constitution which he swore to uphold.
President Buhari is aware the free speech is an integral part of any democratic nation and without it, the elected representatives in the country will be unable to ascertain the people’s feelings and thoughts about governance issues.
The President acknowledged free speech in a democratic society as :
A key component of democratic principles….are so emotionally attached to free speech that they would defend it with all their might.
Mallam Garba, said President Buhari is aware of the People’s concern over the social media bill but has asked that people be calm:
Because the senate is a democratic senate. The President won’t assent to any legislation that may be inconsistent with the constitution of Nigeria.
The Social media bill is presently been debated by the Senate.
