Gbolahon was destitute, always drunk, erratic and was homeless. He’s now totally transformed. Something happened. Olorunfunmi Adebajo happened to him!
Olorunfunmi Adebajo was just another Nigerian facing life’s challenges like everyone else when she did the unusual by contributing part of her essence into making another’s life meaningful.
Olorunfunmi, a University of Lagos graduate of Educational Administration and Planning first shared the story of Gbolahon on facebook a few weeks ago.
In her own words,
He lives right across my house and was in class with one of my elder ones. I heard he was very brilliant but I’ve known him to be a chronic drunk for at least 15 years…His case was worse than a mad man. He’d drink ‘ogogoro’ all day, get beaten up and slapped by passersby, get hit by vehicles and then walk/shout all over the street all night.

Olorunfunmi Adebajo said that God laid it on her heart to talk to this man inspite of the fact that he had the very erratic behaviour. After having a conversation with Gbolahon, Olorunfunmi paid a local restaurant to feed him twice a day. She also bought him a soap and toothbrush as he did not at the time have a life “outside his bottle of gin.” Soon, Gbolahon became a serious project for Olorunfunmi as she checked on him every morning and evening.
Just a few days later, Gbolahon began to look really different and soon “survived” 3 weeks without alcohol.
According to Olorunfunmi who did not only feed him but ensured he had a place to sleep and work to do,
Now he converses coherently and does not stagger anymore, his eyeballs are clear… I’m grateful to God for the privilege to serve humanity but I’LL BE NEEDING PROFESSIONAL REHABILITATION for Gbolahan.
Olorunfunmi Adebajo and Gbolahon‘s story is one of unconditionally loving a total destitute stranger. According to her, “God is teaching me to love without expecting anything in return.”
