In a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), Brigadier-General Johnson Olawumi announced that there were plans to make the scheme optional. This is aimed at controlling the population of Youth Corp members which had risen from 2,364 at inception in 1975 to 229,016 in 2014.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Developement, Mrs. Rabi Jimeta predicted that if the scheme remained compulsory, the number of “corpers” may rise to 300,000 by the year 2020. Making the scheme optional would decongest the orientation camps as well as reduce the expenses incurred in the scheme.
President Muhammadu Buhari on his part applauded the NYSC for exposing Nigerian graduates and pledged that his administration would ensure the improvement of the conditions of the scheme.
However, President Buhari also promised to look into the issue of making the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) optional to ascertain it would be for the best interest of Nigerian graduates or not.
