Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria in Olusegun Obasanjo‘s presidency, has revealed during an interview with BBC Hausa that President Goodluck Jonathan has pleaded with him three times on different occasions to come back to and support People Democratic Party (PDP).
Atiku revealed he turned down the offer every time Jonathan asked him to return PDP. He also offered an explanation on why he has not being in attendance of APC Presidential rallies. Atiku was also paid a visit by Aminu Tambuwal and former President, Ibrahim Babangida.
Confirming the rumour that Jonathan visited him last Friday at his residential home in Abuja, Atiku said;
In the evening I went to bed early, but at around 12 am, I was told the president was in my sitting room, so I came down and after exchanging pleasantries, I asked him to what I deserved such a visit and he said he just came back to still plead with me for support.
He said I need to go back to the PDP because we built the party and we are its founding fathers, and that we needed to go back and rebuild it. I told him “this is the third time you are asking me to return to the PDP and my answer has always been the same; I am not going back.”
On his conspicuous absence from APC Presidential rallies and campaigns, Atiku said his absence was due to lack of invitation.
I campaigned for late Shehu Yar’Adua twice successfully. We did that of Abiola, Obasanjo and for myself.
I am not a light weight politician, whoever needs my presence should contact and extend invitation to me.
They need to check the strategy they are adopting and I made that clear to the campaign DG, Rotimi Amaechi and I told him that “if you don’t consult or invite me, you will not see me.”
Atiku also expressed his confidence in APC‘s victory in the upcoming presidential elections. He said;
APC will win because everyone is tired with the current administration. So, despite the challenges in APC, change will surely come.
