A factory full of expired goods has been uncovered in Trade Fair premises in Lagos by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The Investigation and Enforcement Department of the agency discovered and exposed the factory during a raid.
The factory which specializes in re-validating and distributing expired and counterfeit food products is reportedly situated in Lagos State Trade fair. The expired and fake goods include Amoy Dark Soy Sauce, Exeter Corned Beef, Costa Corned beef and many others.
The goods were reportedly smuggled from Ghana. According to NAFDAC the expiry dates on the goods have been changed from 2014 to 2016 and most of them are not registered by the agency. Victor Okeke, a 24 year old man suspected to be connected to the expired goods has been charged with Counterfeiting.
The Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Paul Orhii disclosed that the penalty according to the current law of counterfeiting is N500,000 or a 15 years jail term. He said that the penalty is inadequate, and that the agency will work on making the crime a non bailable offence.
