Sunday Adeniyi widely known as King Sunny Ade has charged seven marketers for the violation of his music.
The lawsuit which was filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos, since 2007 will finally have it trial on Friday, October 30th.
The seven marketers whom are defendants are Alhaja Awawu Ade Amodu and Sons, African Songs Limited, Lati Records Manufacturer of Nigeria Limited, Ibukunolu Printers Nigeria Ltd, and M.O. Alagbada Nigeria Company, Alagbada Nigeria Ltd, Take Your Choice Records Store Ltd.
The King of Juju music demanded the sum of N3billion from the marketers for allegedly contravening 43 of his works and to also return the master tapes of those peculiar work to him (King Sunny Ade).
King Sunny Ade explained how the ‘wildcat’ reproduction and distribution of his works damaged his financial and social worth.That, his monthly revenue from live shows which used to be N5m reduced to N500,000 and his monthly income from sales of compact discs and cassettes diluted from N3.5m to N150,000.
Adverse to King Sunny Ade claims, the Marketers maintained their points, saying that since 1966, they had received and negotiated musical performance bookings for him, in addition to sponsoring his musical tour of the United Kingdom.
King Sunny Ade acknowledged that he had five years agreement with them in 1970’s but since the deal had expired, the marketers refused to return his master tapes in spite of many times he demanded for it.
