The burial rites of the Ooni of Ife is to begin today, 12th of August, 2015. Residence of Ife have been advised to stay indoors while the rites last.
The burial rites of the Ooni of Ife has shut down activities in the town.
The traditional monarch died on July 28 in a hospital in the United kingdom. But the chiefs of Ife are yet to make the official traditional announcement.
However, news has it that the official announcement will be made today by the Oro Cult of Ife.
Oba Layi Adereti, the Aware of Iwara and the head of the Oro Cult said the burial rites of the deceased Ooni will begin today. Consequently, he advised residence of Ife to remain indoors between 9am and 4pm when the rite would last.
The authorities of the University of Ife, now known as the Obafemi Awolowo University, have admonished its students to stay indoors.
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr I M Durosinmi announced this yesterday, on behalf of the university authorities.
This is to inform the generality of students that there shall be a curfew in Ile-Ife, on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 from 9am to 4pm and from 11pm till dawn.
Students are therefore strongly advised to stay on campus while those outside the campus should remain indoors.
The Division of the Students’ Affairs counts on the maturity and sense of responsibility of Great Ife students and appeals to all students to comply with the information and continue to keep the peace.
A number of banks in the town have also announced that they will not be operating today. A worker in a branch of Access Bank in Ife told Punch Correspondent that:
We won’t open tomorrow (Wednesday) because of the rite which Ife chiefs said would be performed for the Ooni.
We were asked to stay at home tomorrow (Wednesday) because of the rite by the Oro worshippers. We will resume on Thursday.
Several markets in Ife town have also been shutdown as shoppers were advised to buy their needs before the burial rites begins.
