A health insurance scheme has been made compulsory for all Nollywood actors.
A number of Nollywood actors have been involved in one health challenge or another. Some have even lost their lives in the incident. This has necessitated a health insurance scheme for the Nigerian actors.
The health insurance is a type of coverage that pays for medical and surgical expenses that are incurred by the insured. Health insurance can either refund the insured for expenses incurred from illness or injury or pay the hospital directly.
In recent times, Nigeria has lost many promising entertainers to the cold hands of death due to some sickness the cure or therapy of which the artist could not afford. Some desperate celebrities have been forced to go to the public to solicit for funds.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) led by its president Ibinabo Fiberesima-Egbuka said that health insurance policy for Nollywood actors is long overdue.
We got different packages for different categories as it affects the actor. It starts from N13, 000 a year to N16, 000 a year. We also have N40, 000 a year package. It is a fair deal. It covers quite a lot of medicals.
We also have free medical checks for our members as well. Not only veterans have the problem of lack of money and jobs. It’s a general situation because producers use their ‘own’ people for jobs instead of AGN members.
It is the hope of fans of Nollywood that the health insurance scheme will help the celebrated actors and prevent them from the untimely deaths experienced in the industry.
