Nigerian author and scriptwriter Chidera Okolie has called out Nigerian ladies to maintain their self confidence and esteem and stick to their African skin tone instead of trying to spend so much to lighten it and more to maintain it.
According to her, 77% of women in Nigeria use skin lightening products. Chidera Okolie paid tribute to Nigerian women who have maintained their natural skin tone including Nollywood’s Genevieve Nnaji, singer Waje, Yvonne Okoro and others.
See Chidera’s statement below.
‘The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin lightening products, the highest percentage in the world. Not far behind is Togo at 59 percent and Senegal at 27 percent. #SAD’
I’m not here to tell you to abstain from an act that will be all too telling on you sooner or later!
I’m not even here to tell you not to go all ‘Snow White’ because you feel that is the definition of beauty.
It’s not any concern of mine if you are willing to discard a complexion you can NEVER regain even if you choose to sit under the sun for months for one you can purchase in a beauty store!
I’m definitely not going to wonder why you will spend so much to acquire a complexion you are going to spend even more to maintain for the rest of your life whereas N300 pears baby lotion will do just fine on that which God has blessed you with! Maintenance is rarely difficult if it’s natural.
I’m not even going to bother asking why a ‘sane’ person will single handedly purchase skin cancer with money that can be invested in something productive!
I’m only going to ask you to have some dignity for yourself and the younger ones who look up to you…including your unborn children.
Self confidence and esteem can NEVER be bought when lost! Please allow common sense to remain common!
Continue to tag beautiful black ladies. We can save whatever is left of our rich brown complexion!
