An albino boy, Yohana Bahati, has been kidnapped from his mum and killed by a armed gang for his body parts in Tanzania. This is despite the fact that the government of Tanzania banned the killing of people with albinism earlier this year.
The barbaric act, mainly perpetuated by Tanzania witchdoctors has been on for a long time. It is reported that at least 74 people with albinism have been killed since 2000 despite the government placing children with the condition in special protected homes to avoid being killed.
Tanzanian witchdoctors believe that the body parts of albinos bring good fortune and wealth and have been killing people with the condition for ages. The Tanzanian Albinism Society has earlier said banning witchdoctors from killing albinos is not enough but a starting point.
“It’s just a starting point. The government should understand it is an endless story from 2006 until this time. No action has been taken to stop the killings,” The Secretary General of Tanzanian Albinism Society said. “We haven’t seen where these hands, legs and skin are taken. This is the big question. If the witchdoctors will tell us that they are taken to somebody, and what purpose they are used for, we will be in a better position. Through the witchdoctors we can reach the real culprits. That is our one demand: for the government to find these people.”
According to reports, body parts sell at around $600 and as much as $75,000 for a corpse.
