Traditional Ruler Suspended Because of Kola Nuts

Igwe Ben Ameke, a traditional Ruler in Umueri town of Anambra state, has been suspended on account of not upholding the traditional customs and tradition in the town regarding breaking of Kola Nuts. As one of the traditional rulers of the Anambra East Local Government, Igwe Ben was present at the welcome ceremony of Governor Willie Obiano who was on a ‘Thank you tour’ to the town.

The eastern traditional ruler had dragged the Kola Nuts from Mr Anthony Oli who was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor Obiano. Breaking of Kola nuts is a very vital aspect of the Igbo tradition, not everyone reserves the right to breaking of Kola nut. It was said that he lacked etiquette and do not respect the customs and tradition practised in the town. A directive was given by Igwe Alex Edozieuno, the chairman of the Anambra East Traditional Council. He said:

Efforts were made to correct Igwe Ameke but it proved futile as he insisted on breaking the Kola Nuts stating that he is the son of the soil. He was however advised to get training after which he would be re-admitted provided he presents a certificate of training as an evidence.
