Kenneka Jenkins: A young lady’s death is currently being investigated after her body was found dead in a hotel freezer over the weekend
19 year old Kenneka Jenkins was found dead in a hotel freezer at Rosemont’s Crowne Plaza on Sunday. This was over 24 hours after she left her home on Chicago’s West Side to party with friends at the hotel and conference centre.
This case has gained national attention as her mother, Teresa Jenkins has suggested the presence of foul play by the police in the matter. She said that they failed to act fast enough when the news of the disappearance came to them.
To me, I feel like they helped kill my child: the police department and this hotel.
Martin lashed out at authorities and hotel staff, who she accused of waiting too long to review surveillance footage. The hotel staff allegedly told her they required a missing person report before doing so, the Tribune reported.
The police, Martin said, allegedly told her to wait a few hours before filing a missing person report. If they done so sooner, she added, her daughter may have been found alive. And it was only after Martin pleaded with authorities, she said, that they agreed to look again at the hotel’s surveillance video. They eventually spotted footage of Jenkins stumbling near the front desk.
She said this during an interview with local media. She felt that enough was not done to assist her when she pleaded for help.
According to Jenkin’s Mother, she had been told by the authorities that the freezer though isolated was still functioning and cold. However, it is still unclear who found the deceased’s body and how she died. An autopsy performed on Sunday was inconclusive, reports the Chicago Tribune. Officials say it could be several weeks before toxicology results are available. Rosemont police have released few details, citing an open investigation.
Detective Joe Balogh, a spokesman for the Rosemont Police was reported to have said that investigators are interviewing others who were with Jenkins at the party. They were also inspecting footage and media posts that have circulated since the incident. One viral Facebook post showed Jenkins and some others listening to loud music in a hotel room. This has helped the police to identify the people captured in it.
Kenneka Jenkins was seen last on the hotel’s ninth floor. However, her friends phoned her mother when they couldn’t find her before leaving the party. Jenkins’s friends, Martin said, told her the young woman disappeared after they briefly left her alone in the hotel hallway to retrieve her car keys and cellphone from inside the room.
But Martin has since questioned that account saying that the friends’ description of events keeps changing. Martin also complained that police refused to let her view Jenkins’s body.
Why can’t I see my daughter? Why can’t I see how she died?
Martin said police initially told her Jenkins was intoxicated when she entered the freezer, that “freak accidents like that do occur.” But now she questions this fact. Could her daughter, if indeed inebriated, have summoned the strength and coordination to open the freezer’s heavy door.
