Ethiopia first female president promised to focus on gender equality.
Ethiopian members of parliament have elected Sahle-Work Zewde as the country’s first female president on Thursday, 25 October.
Zewde is at present UN under-Secretary-General and special representative of its Secretary General to the African Union.
After being sworn in, she pledged to promote peace while addressing parliament.
“I urge you all, to uphold our peace, in the name of a mother, who is the first to suffer from the absence of peace.”
Zewde also promise to work hard to make gender equality a reality in Ethiopia.
Sahle-Woke Zewde was Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the African Union and the United Nations economic Commission for Africa.
