In this part of the world, it is very common to refer to every meat from almost every animal source as beef or just meat. Even the literate folks are guilty of this. The exceptions are just meat that are totally different; of course, nobody would refer to chicken, turkey, snail and pork as beef.
It is however easy to differientiate pork from beef, due to the structure and appearance. So they are referred to by their names. This is not the case with other animals. Nigerians refer to the meat from goat, cattle, cow, sheeps and other related animals as “beef”.
Even in restaurants, waitresses face difficulty and irrational attitides from clients when asked the type of meat they want.To most people, meat is meat. Or better still “all meat is beef”. The waitresses have to go through the stress of clarifying the names by saying “cow meat” “goat meat” “lamb meat” and so on.
So in this article, I will list out the names of the meat gotten from common animals in Nigeria. The aim of this post is to inform and enlighten you so you will be able to differentiate the different meats we have around. Knowledge, they say, is power.
