The Accused Is Said To Be Three Months Pregnant. Despite That Fact, Her Bail Request Is Denied.
Justice Yusuf Haliru of the Federal high court Abuja, struck out a fresh bail application filed by Maryam Sanda today. The pregnant mother of a six month old baby stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to death at their home in Abuja in November last year.
Maryam’s counsel, Daudu Joseph today told the court to grant her bail because of her pregnancy and the fact that she needed to take care of her 6-month-old baby.
“My lord, the new fact is that she is three months pregnant and I have done my research,” Daudu told the court.
However, the prosecuting counsel, James Idachaba, asked the court to reject the application on grounds that it constituted an abuse of court of process. This is because Sanda’s counsel had failed to withdraw her notice of appeal, This challenged the December 14th ruling declining her bail.
“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for his (Daudu’s) argument to sway this court. The argument has not in anyway swayed me. The application is liable to be struck out and it is accordingly struck out.”the judge ruled
Meanwhile Maryam and her baby are being remanded at the Suleja prison.
